COURSE DESCRIPTION

Practice and study of speech communication fundamentals, including interpersonal skills, critical listening, small group problem-solving, information gathering, and preparation and delivery of a variety of informal presentations. This course satisfies the required core-oral communications for general education.

 

TEXT

An edition of Fundamentals of Speech Communication taken from a text by Beebe,

Beebe, and Ivy has been custom-made for Morehead State University and is available in

the campus bookstore.

Bring it to class. We will refer to parts of  this text in most classes class .   Details on assignments will be explained in the text and may not be covered in class

Read Assigned Chapters before each class.  Quizzes will be on assigned chapters. Prepare one presentation assignment for delivery in the next class supported by reference material.

 

Class 2 8/29    ASSIGNMENT Due Story
 – Turn in Written Topic Outline
Present the assignment
- A story with an introduction and conclusion that illustrate how that story could be used in a speech.
   (Using Story Telling skills)  -Introduce and present a story to support a theme or thesis
                                              – (Time 2-4 minutes)

Class 3 9/5     ASSIGNMENT Due
 Informative speech       
– (Time 2-4 minutes)
 
Be prepared to Introduce an other speaker and do an oral evaluation of another speaker.  Have your Introduction of Speaker Form completed.

 

Class 5 9/20   ASSIGNMENT Due
Persuasive Speech    
– (Time 3-5 minutes)
 

Class 7 10/03 Teams will meet.  Minutes of all team meeting will be taken and submitted with the presentation on Class 8.  Minutes need only outline  1. Reason for meeting  2. Attendance  3. Total time and date.  Someone on the team must keep a record of all meeting (as previously listed) including “on line meetings” and or “calls.”  Modern technology permits meetings without physically being together.  Your team may elect to meet anytime during the week of October 3, 2006, and not necessarily at class time.  Class time is set aside so you will have some time to meet.

 

Class 8 10/10   Team Presentation 
– (Time
(to be announced depending on the number of teams) __ minutes). Whole team must be in attendance.
  No make up date is available if you are absent.

Turn in Job Description and be prepared to

 take part in a  Job Interview.

 Be Prepared to be an interviewer and job applicant.

Class 15 11/28    Complete any “make up” presentations.   Review for  FINAL presentations

 

Class 16 12/05   Part 1 - Final Speeches
     
 Due to the size of the class and the time needed for presentations, Final Speeches must be started a week early.

 He has specialized training in computer authoring, web site/course design, and bilingual education.

Dr. Bobbert has taught on four continents and several states.  He is an independent movie producer and teaches computer courses and Tai Chi for Health at several colleges, universities and businesses.
